Progestogen
The progestogens used are entirely of synthetic origins and are therefore different from the progestogen that occurs naturally in women. But this difference results in additional positive properties. Apart from their, most important role to prevent the growth of the uterus linings during HRT, but some of them also exhibit positive effects, e.g. prevention of osteoporosis. Today, some experts believe it is biologically plausible that different progestogens might have different effects on the cardiovascular system. Positive effects on bone mineral density have recently been shown for norethisterone acetate (NETA).5
Progestogens protect the uterus inner lining against endometrial cancer compared to the use of oestrogens alone.
Therefore, for women with an intact uterus a combination oestrogen/progestogen therapy should be used.
For women without a uterus, oestrogens alone should be used.
