Oestrogen
There are predominantly two different oestrogen types available for HRT: oestrogens of animal or plant origin. Animal oestrogens are obtained from the urine of pregnant mares and are called conjugated equine oestrogens. They do not correspond to the oestrogens occurring naturally in humans but they do have an oestrogen-like effect in the human body. The synthetically manufactured 17ß-estradiol is derived from natural sources (plants). It is identical to the human oestrogen. In a recent European survey more than three quarters of physicians preferred 17ß-estradiol over other types of oestrogen.1
