What is recombinant Factor Vlla?

Novo Nordisk has developed NovoSeven®, a recombinant Factor Vlla for treatment of bleeds in haemophilia A and B patients with inhibitors. This recombinant protein is expressed from cloned human FVII genes in baby hamster kidney cells. No material of human origin is used in the production process or in the final product.

NovoSeven® induces haemostasis in pharmacologic doses by converting FX to FXa on the surface of ‘activated’ platelets. Following a series of complex steps, FXa will lead to the development of a blood clot at the site of injury. It is important to know, that under normal circumstances, platelets only become ‘activated’ at the site of injury – thus preventing blood clots from forming in areas where they are not wanted.  This distinct mechanism of action explains NovoSeven’s potential for safe and effective haemostasis, even in the absence of factors VIII or IX.

In Europe, NovoSeven® is indicated for the treatment of spontaneous bleeding episodes in haemophilia A and B patients with inhibitors and in patients with acquired haemophilia. It is also indicated for treatment of bleeding episodes due to surgery in patients with inhibitors.
