There are basically two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in children and adults under age 30. It develops as a result of destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. Therefore insulin treatment is life-saving for people with type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a result of progressive dysfunction of the beta cells and the reduced ability of the body's cells to use insulin, known as insulin resistance. It is very often hereditary, and obesity and sedentary lifestyle are major risk factors for the development of this condition. Who is at risk? |
