How is diabetes diagnosed?

If one has symptoms, such as:

  • Thirst
  • Frequent urination (polyuria)
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight loss

he/she should visit a doctor for a blood glucose measurement, together with other blood tests.

However, approximately 50% of people with diabetes have no symptoms and are diagnosed incidentally. Diabetes is a serious disease and increases the risk of loss of vision, amputations, kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment the risk of diabetes-specific complications can be significantly reduced.
