Diabetes screening initiative launched in Dubai
The Changing Diabetes® World Tour initiative is providing free diabetes screening and raising awareness about diabetes in the United Arab Emirates.
Friday 3rd December, Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark visited the Changing Diabetes® World Tour, a mobile diabetes screening initiative organised by Novo Nordisk A/S and Steno Diabetes Center under the patronage and support of the UAE Ministry of Health. The Royal visit took place in Dubai Festival City, and was also attended by His Excellency Dr. Hanif Hassan Ali, UAE Minister of Health and Dr. Abdulrazzaq Almadani from Emirates Diabetes Society.
Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark has served as Patron of the World Diabetes Foundation since March 2003. She plays a highly visible role, travelling to low- and middle-income countries across the world to support projects funded by the World Diabetes Foundation and using her patronage to raise awareness and funds for the cause.
The objective of the Changing Diabetes® World Tour is to help identify people who have diabetes or are at high risk of developing diabetes without knowing it. Anyone aged 30-75 is encouraged to get a free screening. Local medical staff are offering to test blood glucose levels (HbA1c), blood pressure, BMI (body mass index), and to measure hip and waist circumference.
By screening individuals in the UAE, the initiative will offer insights into developing the understanding of diabetes in the region and provide the basis for recommendations for local screening strategies in the future.
"We hope that the initiative will make people more aware of the risks, symptoms and ways of preventing diabetes. There is significant proof that screening and early detection of diabetes can make a difference; both in terms of people living longer and healthier lives and in terms of health systems saving substantial costs", says Lise Kingo, executive vice president and chief of staffs at Novo Nordisk A/S.
The Changing Diabetes® World Tour is in the UAE in connection with the World Diabetes Day on 14 November and the MENA Diabetes Leadership Forum taking place on 12-13 December 2010 in Dubai, where His Royal Highness The Crown Prince of Denmark will serve as a keynote speaker. The Forum aims to study the economic impact of diabetes in the MENA region with a view to devising innovative and effective ways of tackling diabetes.
The Changing Diabetes® World Tour will be in Dubai until 6 December 2010. Next it will go to Abu Dhabi from 18 - 31 December 2010.
