Lise Kingo accepts the MIA Prize 2005 from HRH Crown Princess Mary

MIA stands for Mangfoldighed I Arbejdslivet (Diversity in Working Life) and is awarded to companies that take the lead in promoting diversity and consistently preventing discrimination. The prize, which was awarded for the second consecutive year, was established by the Danish Institute for Human Rights with support from the European Union, which has adopted new rules ensuring equal opportunities for all regardless of gender, ethnic background, religion, handicap, age, or sexual orientation.

Novo Nordisk was nominated in the category 'Large private companies'. During the ceremony, the judges said that Novo Nordisk has realised a compassionate and respectful personnel policy in an exemplary way.

"Novo Nordisk views diversity and equal opportunity as requirements for serious competitive strength. And with its results, the company has also shown that commitment to diversity brings concrete competitive advantages,” one of the judges said.

Diversity on the agenda

Lise Kingo, Executive Vice President for People, Reputation and Relations, accepted the award on behalf of Novo Nordisk.

"Diversity is an area that means a lot for Novo Nordisk. We have a long history of promoting equal treatment of people, and in recent years we have made an extra effort through the development of a global diversity strategy that will strengthen Novo Nordisk’s opportunity to reflect the diverse people and cultures in our surroundings. It is an important part of securing Novo Nordisk’s ability to compete in a global market," says Lise Kingo.

Judges for the MIA prize include experts from the Danish business world, trade organisations, government, and educational institutions. The judges selected the winners based on the five MIA principles:

  • Make diversity a resource
  • Ensure equal opportunities and prevent discrimination
  • Include all minority groups in the diversity strategy
  • Direct the efforts at all phases of employment
  • Include co-workers and target groups in the efforts.
