Disclosure on Management Approach: Environment

Organisation

The Environment, Bioethics & OH&S Committee is the company's highest authority with regard to environmental, bioethical and occupational health & safety (EBO) issues. The committee works on behalf of Executive Management to ensure: that Novo Nordisk’s interests and needs regarding EBO issues are met; and that Novo Nordisk is in compliance with the charter of the Novo Group. The committee includes two members of Executive Management, Lise Kingo, Chief of Staffs (Chair) and Mads Krogsgård Thomsen, Chief Science Officer.

Policy

The committee is responsible for oversight of strategy, performance and compliance in relation to the Environmental Policy, Bioethics Policy and the Occupational Health & Safety Policy. The Novo Nordisk Way of Management commits the company to subscribe to the International Chamber of Commerce's Business Charter for Sustainable Development, and to support the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

Goals

The Novo Nordisk environmental strategy is supported by a Strategy Action Plan providing specific actions to be undertaken 2005–2008 to address these focus areas:

  • Genetically Modified Organisms
  • Energy and Climate Change
  • Sustainable Process/Product
  • Product Stewardship
  • Transportation
  • Responsible Sourcing.

In addition, environmental aspects and impacts of operations such as resource consumption, waste and emissions are managed as part of ISO 14001 activities. Novo Nordisk has adopted a climate strategy for the company worldwide, in which we have committed to reducing total CO2 emissions in 2014 to 10% below the 2004 level.

Novo Nordisk has a waste strategy for the period 2006–2010. The objective is to reduce the amount of waste and the hazardousness of the company’s waste by focusing on waste prevention and environmentally sound waste management.

Monitoring

The Eco Intensity Ratio (EIR) is a top-level indicator for monitoring of Novo Nordisk's resource efficiency within water and energy. The long-term EIR target for 2006–2010 is a 2% reduction in water and energy consumption relative to production on average per year.

The EIR and climate targets are part of the corporate Balanced Scorecard, Novo Nordisk’s company-wide management tool for measuring progress. Performance against Balanced Scorecard targets is linked to remuneration.
