Steno Diabetes Center
Steno Diabetes Center in Copenhagen was founded in 1932 by one of the founders of Novo Nordisk as "The Steno Memorial Hospital" in order to support diabetes treatment. The centre today is a highly specialised, internationally renowned research and teaching hospital, owned by Novo Nordisk. The centre treats people with diabetes, primarily from the Copenhagen area, and carries out extensive experimental and clinical research into diabetes. Furthermore, it is a leading diabetes teaching facility for medical students as well as for others working with diabetes.
The public health authorities pay for treatment while research projects are financed by Novo Nordisk and various national and international funds. Steno Diabetes Center is affiliated the University of Copenhagen and is a WHO collaborating centre. The centre emphasises the close links between its four spheres of activities: treatment, clinical development, research and teaching.
The centre has more than 6,000 patients, and treatment takes place in an outpatient clinic with a foot clinic, an eye clinic and a bed ward. The outpatient clinic has over 20,000 visits annually.
