Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism
Located in the UK, the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism was established at the beginning of 1999 as a joint venture between Oxford University, the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK and Novo Nordisk.
The vision is the formation of an innovative partnership in health, teaching and research, with a focus on clinical care and research in the fields of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. The three parties have agreed to support the planning and development of the Centre over five years.
The Oxford Radcliffe Trust will be responsible for providing clinical care for patients in specialities of diabetes and endocrinology. More than 15,000 patient contacts every year are expected. Close links and discussions with Novo Nordisk may enable early identification and joint investigation of issues of clinical care and research. This type of partnership and close dialogue with key stakeholder groups may ensure that the full social and environmental potential of anti-diabetic products is realised.
The most significant improvements in healthcare will occur through improved interactions between patients and professionals, and new forms of organising health care according to patient needs. Evidence-based knowledge about how to change the behaviours and more effective communication methods are essential factors in the organisation of the future health care system. We can however, not solve the huge problems related to diabetes without increased efforts in research in order to find new and improved pharmaceuticals and ways to prevent people from developing the diseases. We believe that this can only be done if all serious partners join forces and work in this direction. Our partnership with the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism is one of the ways we intend to find new ways to improve the lives of people with diabetes.
