Innovo™ secures market leadership

Following the July 1999 CE approval of Innovo™, Novo Nordisk's new insulin doser is now being launched in a number of European countries, including key markets such as Austria, the Netherlands and Norway.

As the name implies, Innovo™ is an innovative insulin delivery device developed by Novo Nordisk to improve insulin therapy for people with diabetes all over the world.
People with diabetes have individual needs and preferences when it comes to administering insulin. Innovo™ is a new option with added convenience to cater especially for new insulin users. It complements Novo Nordisk's comprehensive range of administration devices consisting of pens, prefilled syringes and needles. Innovo™ takes insulin administration into the electronic age with its data storage capability - for the immediate benefit of the patient, while at the same time moving a step closer to the integration of day-to-day diabetes management with global disease management systems.

New delivery system
Innovo™ represents a significant step forward in insulin delivery. It is designed to aid compliance and increase patient confidence, convenience and ease of use. It is small, compact and easy to carry, fitting easily into a purse or pocket. It is easy to load, and the insulin dose can readily be dialled in 1-unit increments up to 70 units.
Innovo™ is very easy to use. It fits perfectly in the hand, has unique support for comfortable injections, and provides a visual display indicating when the full dose has been delivered.

Built-in memory
One of the most striking features of Innovo™ is its built-in memory. The easy-to-read display tells patients when they took their latest insulin dose, and the amount of the latest dose. This can help eliminate worry about missed injections and improve patient compliance.
Overall, these features are designed to make it easier for people to live with insulin therapy - especially new patients starting on insulin therapy, people using insulin analogues and those with an active lifestyle.

A growing market
The choice to create a new type of delivery system was a strategic decision for Novo Nordisk. Innovo™ adds to and broadens the company's existing range of devices and complements existing market leaders such as NovoPen® 3 and NovoLet®. The new insulin doser aims to expand the device segment primarily by appealing to the more than one million new patients (both Type 1 and Type 2) who start insulin therapy every year.

Innovo™ is a new insulin delivery concept. The easy-to-use features of Innovo™, including built-in memory, help patients successfully start on and confidently manage their insulin therapy.
Innovo™ was launched in the first European markets in July 1999.
Novo Nordisk is committed to discovering and developing products that make real improvements in the lives of people with diabetes. In 1985, Novo Nordisk revolutionised insulin delivery with the introduction of NovoPen®, and pen systems are now used by one-third of the 12 million insulin users worldwide. In the industrialised countries outside the US, more than 60% of all insulin is sold in cartridges or pre-filled devices. Novo Nordisk provides 70% of the pen systems currently in use. With the creation of Innovo™, an entirely new concept in delivery systems will once again revolutionise insulin delivery and significantly enhance the ability of people with diabetes to take control of their insulin therapy. Since introducing the first insulin pen in 1985, Novo Nordisk remains the only Diabetes Care supplier that manufactures and markets ALL the components necessary for modern insulin treatment: insulin, delivery devices and needles.

Today, the cartridge and pre-filled market is the fastest growing market segment. Competition has intensified as the market has grown. Novo Nordisk holds a strong position in the pre-filled segment with 91% of the market, and accounts for 62% in the cartridge segment. Overall cartridge penetration in 1998 was 33.3% of total insulin consumption, up four percentage points from the year before. Novo Nordisk's market share of the overall cartridge market was 70% in 1998 .
