Novo Nordisk in Kalundborg - An active company with social and environmental responsibility
Novo Nordisk in Kalundborg, north west of Copenhagen, is located in an industrial area on the outskirts of the town. The factory site is shared by Novo Nordisk and Novozymes.
Production of insulin and medicine for treating haemophilia
The factories in Kalundborg are Novo Nordisk's largest production site, with approximately 2,600 employees. The production is divided into three functional units:

Diabetes API (basic insulin production) produces insulin crystals for diabetes treatment. The production is comprised of fermentation using genetically modified yeast cells, followed by a number of recovery and purification processes. We also produce glucagon in the same way for treating insulin shock.

Diabetes Pharmaceuticals (production of finished insulin products) processes the insulin crystals into the finished product. This involves formulating, filling, assembling, packing and shipping insulin products.

Factor VIIa Bulk produces Factor VIIa, which is the active substance in the blood preparation NovoSeven®. Production is based on fermentation using genetically modified animal cells, followed by a series of recovery and purification processes. The purified product is sent for final processing and packing at Novo Nordisk's site in Gentofte.
The site also has laboratories, quality control, maintenance departments, a canteen and administration, which are all related to the production units.
Employee development
We believe in continuous development of our employees. In order to ensure this development of both new and existing employees, we have a range of activities.
For new employees, we have a program which facilitates effective introduction and assignment of duties.
The program includes introduction courses, training and feedback during the employee's first few months at Novo Nordisk.
All employees and/or teams have development plans or training programs with clear goals, and the immediate manager has development interviews with the team and/or individual employee at least once a year.
In order to develop the skills of hourly paid employees, fixed training days have been introduced in the majority of the site. In connection with employee development, we have established ongoing cooperation with local training institutions.

The majority of our employees are offered the opportunity to work from home through PC links to the company. Many of our process operators have also taken up the offer of PC training in order to receive a home-PC.

Nearly all units regularly delegate duties to self-managing teams which annually carry out revisions of each other's work, provide status reports and discuss new possibilities. The aim is to support knowledge sharing across the organisation and to promote delegation.

We have a recreational center with sporting and café facilities for employees.
