Novo Nordisk – A large employer in Hillerød
Novo Nordisk's Hillerød site is located in an industrial area south west of Hillerød. We have made an effort to fit the factories into the landscape, which includes the surrounding recreational area of Brennum Park. Novo Nordisk has enriched the landscape with a lake and planted the area.
To the east Novo Nordisk’s area borders on a housing area (Kighusbakken), while there on the three other sides are more than 250 meters to the nearest houses. Novo Nordisk’s total built-up area is 1,630,00 m2. Novo Nordisk employs about 1,500 people in Hillerød, mainly in production and in research and development.
Both research and production in Hillerød
Novo Nordisk in Hillerød works on researching, developing and producing medical devices for treatment of diabetes and haemophilia. The site also has warehouses for raw materials and products, an energy plant and administration. We currently have activities in three main areas:

Research and development in protein delivery systems. Protein delivery systems include insulin pens, dosers, and other systems for delivering pharmaceutical products. Novo Nordisk’s pens and dosers for administration of insulin are developed in Hillerød.

Manufacture of pre-filled insulin devices. NovoLet® and FlexPen® are used for administration of insulin. To manufacture these products, we use injection moulding for the plastic components, fill the insulin into cartridges, and then we assemble and pack the prefilled pens. Quality control and quality assurance are integral parts of the production process.

Manufacture of durable pens. NovoPen® is a system used for administration of insulin. We buy the components, which we assemble using automatic and manual processes, and then we pack the finished products. Quality control is again an integral part of this production process.

Production of rFVIIa, the active ingredient in NovoSeven®, a preparation for treatment of haemophiliacs with inhibitors against conventional haemophilia medicine.
Good relations with the local community
We value a good relationship with the local community and we make sure that we do not disturb our neighbours.
The creation of a new roundabout and main access way to and from Brennum Park is a joint Novo Nordisk and Hillerød Municipality project that will ensure that we can comply with official traffic noise limits, and that our neighbours are not disturbed by the increased traffic caused by the increasing activities in the coming years.
We regularly welcome visitors from stakeholder groups among other things visitors from education institutions and diabetes societies, and if possible we support cultural and sporting events in the local community.
Attractive workplace
Novo Nordisk in Hillerød gives the employees top priority. We want to be a safe and attractive workplace where our employees want to stay, and this is achieved by offering them excellent conditions.
Many Hillerød employees work in shifts and the production is running seven days a week. We try to plan the shifts so that the employees are assigned equal numbers of day, evening and night shifts. We plan the shifts so a proper handover from colleague to colleague is possible when changing shifts, and give as much freedom as possible when the employees are switching from night shift to day shift.
We also have extended the canteen's opening hours to include evenings and weekends. An improvement that received a warm welcome from the employees.
Focus on health and safety
Employees in each unit elect health and safety representatives, who spend a large part of their working time tackling health and safety problems. Through training, networking and instruction, they become experts in specific areas. Together with the management of each unit, the representatives coordinate health and safety work, draw up workplace assessments and follow up on action plans.
Development – individually and in teams
Each employee has a development plan and a training plan – either individually or in teams. Much of the training is carried out on the job under the guidance of a qualified colleague or manager. This is combined with professional or personal development courses, which can be held both internally and externally.
In the production areas we are continuously working on developing groups of employees that are able to perform several different types of work. We are also working with improvement projects so that individual employees can perform their work more efficiently.
