DAWN - Diabetes Attitudes, Wishes and Needs
The DAWN (Diabetes Attitudes, Wishes and Needs) programme is a global Novo Nordisk initiative in collaboration with the International Diabetes Federation and an International Expert Advisory Board with the aim to improve psychosocial support for people with diabetes worldwide.
The challenges of living with diabetes
Despite the growing quality and availability of treatment, most people with diabetes still do not achieve optimum blood sugar control. The resulting long-term complications are burdensome for both people affected by the disease, their families and society at large.
In many cultures, the disease is still seen as so debilitating that people with diabetes have no hope of leading healthy, productive lives.
This calls for not only the best medicines and delivery systems but also the best education and patient support methods. That is what DAWN is all about.
Focusing on the person behind the disease
The DAWN programme was initiated to increase our understanding of the psychosocial and attitudinal barriers that exist to optimal treatment outcomes of diabetes. On the basis of the global DAWN call to action for better psychosocial support to people with diabetes published by the International Diabetes Federation, the DAWN programme today seeks to engage and empower healthcare professionals, people with diabetes, organisations and decision makers to take concrete national and local steps to improve also the psychosocial aspect of diabetes management.
DAWN focuses on the person behind the disease. In the end, it is all about giving people with diabetes the individual support and coaching they need to master their disease in daily life and deal with both the medical and psychosocial challenges it brings.
A new younger DAWN
Novo Nordisk has recently initiated a global DAWN Youth programme to explore the attitudes, wishes and needs of young people with or at risk of diabetes and their families on a global scale. The aim is to increase awareness about the unique needs and wishes of children, youth and families affected by diabetes and facilitate new partnership actions to meet their needs.
Please join us in changing the future of diabetes - everyone can take action to bring the DAWN vision into practice.
