Trauma

Uncontrolled haemorrhage is the major cause of death (39%) in civilian trauma victims. Sixty-five percent of deaths occur after admission to the hospital and exsanguinations are responsible for between 15-40% these deaths. There is a correlation between transfusion with blood products and mortality. A sizeable number of critically ill trauma subjects have profound acquired coagulopathy as a result of the trauma. The acquired coagulopathy has a correlation with the severity of the injury, and may furthermore be associated with acidosis and hypothermia as well as multiple transfusion syndrome due to high number of red blood cell transfusions.
