Young Voices - Life with Diabetes
At Novo Nordisk, we want to inspire the way we think, both about diabetes as a disease, and about people with diabetes as patients. We want to focus on the real person, the unique individual living behind the disease, so that we can better learn how to help them live a full life with diabetes.
At Novo Nordisk, we want to change the future of diabetes, and we must address this problem by also looking beyond breakthrough science and technology. It requires a forward-looking perspective on how we communicate the need for change and how we motivate people to take action.
The pages of Young Voices: Life with Diabetes are filled with touching stories and emotional images of children worldwide who are living with this condition. Novo Nordisk developed Young Voices as a way to engage young people, physicians, advocates and the communities in our mission to change the course of diabetes.
Young Voices is an intimate portrait of the lives of 13 young people from around the world who are living with diabetes. Happy, Victor, Andrea, Parojn, Clare, Erik, Kelly, Daniel, Natasha, Tamarak, Katja, Sasha and Deeb come from all walks of life, from eight countries that span four continents. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the cultures, the countries, and the age ranges they represent. They all have one thing in common however – they all live with diabetes.
Ten of the young people profiled in Young Voices are living with type 1 diabetes and three have developed type 2. Irrespective of when in life they learned about their condition, they all share a common strength and optimism when it comes to their diabetes. Their stories inspire people of all ages to live their lives to the fullest.
By opening their hearts and homes for Young Voices, these young people allow the reader to reflect on what it means to be young and living with this chronic condition. We invite you to explore the world of diabetes through their eyes – the eyes of the young – through which we can see, understand and positively change the future of diabetes.
Young Voices: Life with Diabetes was published by Novo Nordisk in association with John Wiley & Sons. The proceeds from sales of the book will benefit children with diabetes in developing countries and will be distributed through the World Diabetes Foundation. The book may be purchased at www.amazon.com.
“If you educate one person about diabetes, then you have really educated 20 others, because people pass their knowledge along.” Clare Rosenfeld, age 19, type 1 diabetes
