The external activities of Novo Nordisk in China are at this stage primarily linked to our business activities. Here are some examples.

Labour relations
China has one official union, the China Labour Union, covering all types of employees. As an extension of the existing Chinese union regulations, the employees in Beijing and at the Tianjin site have been encouraged by management to set up local internal unions. This structure promotes an easy channel of communication between employees and management.

The unions meet regularly with management to debate relevant labour issues and plan activities for the employees. From time to time, meetings with management are organised to keep union representatives updated on business and other developments at Novo Nordisk.

Expanding knowledge
Biotechnology in China is still at an early stage of development. However, the Chinese authorities are striving to establish relations with foreign biotechnology companies in order to increase know-how in China within this prosperous field. Novo Nordisk's new research centre in Beijing has technology and state-of-the-art equipment not previously available in China. It is also our intention to primarily recruit Chinese researchers.

Enzyme Business does not just offer its customers enzymes, but also a 'package' consisting of training, service and know-how, for example, on dose optimisation and environmentally sound solutions. Safety guidelines are part of the package, which enhances the protection of operators.

Each year, Health Care sets up training seminars for doctors all over China in order to enhance the knowledge of diabetes treatment. There are only around 1,000 diabetes specialists in the country, most of whom live in the larger cities. It is therefore of great importance to train doctors especially in the rural areas.

1999 target:

30 seminars for enzyme customers about enzyme applications and safety.

Train 3,000 doctors in diabetes care.

In conclusion
How do we make a difference in China? However challenging at times, we believe that our presence in China contributes to the development of Chinese society in a number of ways, by:

training and investing in our employees,

setting high standards for social and environmental responsibility,

supporting education in the communities,

introducing hi-tech knowledge and equipment,

providing a life-saving drug and sustainable industrial processes,

establishing R&D and production facilities not just sales offices.
