Green accounts for Hillerød, Denmark

The first phase of the NovoLet® production project, an injection moulding plant for production and part-assembly of plastic components for the disposable insulin pen NovoLet® 3 ml, was completed in 1994. The next stage, a plant for pharmaceutical finished products, is divided into two phases. The first phase, pen assembly and packaging, was concluded on January 1, 1998. The second phase, which includes formulation and filling of insulin cartridges, will be ready for production in January 2000.

NovoLet® Complet - one of the world’s most technologically-advanced pharmaceutical plants, today stands complete in Hillerød. The factory produces the disposable insulin pen NovoLet® 3 ml, from the casting of the pen itself to filling of insulin cartridges and assembly and packaging of the finished product. The site also includes Novo Nordisk Medical Systems, which undertakes R&D as well as production and assembly of the durable insulin pen NovoPen®. Novo Nordisk in Hillerød is the workplace of 589 employees.

Minimum environmental impact

As a factory for finished goods without basic insulin production, consumption of water and energy is limited. The environmental impact is minimal and the company has gained environmental approvals for light industry. The green accounts for 1998 are the first for the factory.

During construction of the NovoLet® Complet factory and the development of plant and processes, we have at all times attached great importance to using the latest technology available in e.g. heat management and energy conservation. We can thus monitor the energy consumption of each process, and special systems have been installed for central management of lighting and heating throughout the factory. We have also established heat recovery from our refrigeration plant.

Plastic waste for recycling
The largest waste stream from the factory is solid waste in the form of plastic residues from the injection moulding plant. However, this is an environmentally-sound type of plastic which can be recycled. In 1998 we concluded an agreement with a company which takes most of our plastic waste for recycling.

Manufacture of the disposable insulin pen NovoLet® involves use of a special type of plastic which contains formaldehyde. This substance evaporates just after moulding while the components are still hot. The vapours are exhausted together with ventilation air in very small quantities which do not effect the environment. In the cooling plant we use ammonium instead of freon, which depletes the ozone layer.

Compliance with environmental legislation
In 1998 there were no accidental releases, complaints from neighbours or breaches of the terms of the environmental approval. Novo Nordisk in Hillerød thereby fully meets the company’s overall objective of full compliance with environmental legislation.

Health and safety
Our most important target in this area is to reduce consumption of plastic components containing formaldehyde. The quantities involved are so small that they do not present a health risk to our employees. Nonetheless, we will invest continually in applying new, more environmentally-sound types of plastic. On design of new products we also take the environmental and health and safety perspectives into account.

All processes in the new, high-tech factory for finished goods are automated. We thus avoid monotonous repetitive work, which is done by machines and robots. Products are transported within the factory by automated trucks and our warehouse is equipped with fully-automatic cranes.

Consumption of resources

Consumption of water: 27,300 m3
All water is of drinking quality supplied from the municipal supply mains. Water consumption constitutes less than 1% of the total water consumption of Novo Nordisk in Denmark.

Energy consumption: 64,300 GJ
Energy for Novo Nordisk in Hillerød is supplied from the public supply mains, the company's own natural-gas boiler facility and district heating from the municipal district heating network. Energy consumption constitutes approximately 1.5% of Novo Nordisk's total energy consumption.

Consumption of raw materials: 1,080 tons
In 1998 a total of 1,080 tons of raw materials and auxiliaries were consumed at Hillerød. This does not include packaging. The primary raw material is plastic granulate, accounting for 1,012 tons.

Discharges to the environment

Waste water: 25,200 m3
Liquid waste flows comprise waste water from cleaning and sanitation.

Solid waste: 429 tons
Waste is disposed of by recycling, incineration or controlled destruction. Waste which can be recycled is collected and reused. This applies to paper, cardboard, plastic and iron and metal. Waste for controlled destruction is primarily chemical waste from laboratories which is sent to Kommunekemi.

Emissions to air
The most important source of air emissions from production in Hillerød is
activities related to own production of energy.
