HEALTH CARE PACKAGING

Due to a large stockpile from 1995 the amount of packaging materials purchased in 1996 was very low and the eco-productivity index (EPI) for 1996 abnormally high. In 1997 the volume of purchased materials increased in line with an increase in sales. The eco-productivity index has increased by 7 percentage points from 1995, mainly due to a more packaging-efficient product mix and optimization of packaging materials.

1997 target: Implement and evaluate the new packaging and recycling system for NovoLet®, our prefilled insulin syringe, in Germany.

The target has been achieved. The new recycling system which was introduced in Germany at the end of 1996 was fully implemented during 1997. The new system has made it possible to change the sales packaging of NovoLet® from a plastic case to a pure cardboard box. The NovoLet® syringes are collected in a box made from re-cycled polypropylene. They are then disassembled into the different components and each fraction is recycled separately.

  • The new packaging and recycling system has been implemented successfully and patients, pharmacies and doctors are very satisfied with the system.
  • The recycling system has furthermore been introduced in the Netherlands and Austria.
  • 100 tons of virgin polypropylene have been saved due to the new system.
  • 42 tons of NovoLet® have been recycled and used for NovoLet® collection boxes, ball-point pens and folders.

ENZYME BUSINESS PACKAGING

In 1997 the volume of packaging materials for enzyme products increased by 22% in line with an increase in sold volumes. The trend is to sell more and more of our enzyme products in units that can be handled using a fork-lift truck, which is clearly advantageous from a working environment point of view. In 1997 there was an increase in polypropylene big bags (1000 litres) and pallet containers (1000 litres). The eco-productivity index decreased by 13 percentage points, which is primarily due to an increase in heavier packaging materials per unit sold.

In 1998 we will continue our cooperation with our suppliers on improving existing packaging materials and developing new types of packaging, both with the aim of minimizing material consumption.
